The NEC Express5800/R140b-4 server is a 4-way enterprise server, designed to provide scalable performance and expandable capacity with proven enterprise-class reliability. These benefits together with the excellent compactness of a 4U rack form factor provide an ideal foundation for server consolidation, enterprise computing, complex transactions and virtualization.

Overview

The Express5800/R140b-4 is a server using the most recent Intel® processor technology. It supports up to 4 Intel® Xeon® MP 7500 8-core processors. These eight cores have been designed and optimised so that they do not increase the load or electricity consumption within infrastructures.

This server system is intended specifically for space-constrained corporate Data Centers looking for large scale up capabilities or for server consolidation, providing a more cost effective and reliable solution. And which require resource performance for Microsoft ®Windows, Linux® and VMware® environments.

The R140b-4 is designed for companies running critical applications requiring superior performance, such as

  • Large-scale database systems,
  • ERP applications, CRM, Business Intelligence,
  • and not forgetting e-commerce architectures
  • or even company messaging platforms.

NEC is also hoping to meet the needs of the section of the market that is moving towards a mixed Windows/Linux environment with this new four-processor server.

Benefits

Scalability, availability and reliability in the 4U rack modular enclosure

With this new 4 way server, NEC brings forth a solution combining high availability and performance, to enterprises. These features perfectly respond to the needs of Datacenters; a key market for the development of high value-added solutions.

Server consolidation

According to Gartner, virtualisation is one of the ten technologies that will shape the strategies of IT departments in the next three years. It believes that it will have a significant impact on the way companies do business and organise themselves, and the US firm is advising heavy investment.

In response to this need, NEC is offering IT managers this top-of-the-range server dedicated to virtualisation.

Thanks to its performances level and Virtualisation capabilities (VMware, Xen), the Express5800/R140b-4 is an optimised solution enabling the installation and operation of multiple applications across the same server.

Therefore this allows conservation of power/space, optimised hardware costs and reduced maintenance costs.

Performance and reliability in a scalable server

The NEC Express5800/R140b-4 supports exceptional performance gains enabled by the latest eight core Intel Xeon processor MP 7500 series which provides an outstanding server solution for databases and enterprise-class computing for Microsoft ®Windows, Linux® and VMware® environments.

NEC simplifies the IT environment and offers businesses solutions integrated with the latest generation of processors on the market. The Express5800/R140b-4 supports up to 4 Intel® Xeon® MP 7500 8-core processors in a 4U rack. They are on average 3 times more efficient and quicker than their predecessors in the 7400 series. The Intel Xeon 7500 series processors also ensure optimised performance and superior scalability, in particular for the memory capacity, which is doubled in comparison to the old generation server.

Companies will also benefit from improved RAS functions (reliability, continuity of service and ease of intervention). These features integrated as standard are designed to maintain the company’s data integrity, to increase availability and limit scheduled interruptions, and to keep strategic applications online.

In order to meet future requirements, NEC is offering IT managers a highly scalable solution with application deployment flexibility and the option of adding processors (up to 4), memory (up to 512 GB) and storage capacity (up to 4.8 TB), with integrated input/output slots. This means that the infrastructure deployed is able to evolve in line with company requirements, thus reducing the costs involved.

Optimized energy efficiency

Thanks to the new Intel ® Xeon ® 7500 series processors which display unprecedented performance for virtualisation, allows enterprises to maximize the return on their IT investments.

Thanks to the innovations which they integrate, they offer a performance reserve and a higher reliability, with a significant scalability for servers on a large scale.

1 new R140b-4 server can replace 20 old ones!

Just 1 R140b-4 server does the job of up to 20 single-core servers from the 2005 generation. Plus it reduces electricity consumption by more than 92%, while saving 95% of the space.

Simplified remote management

Supplied as standard with the EXPRESSSCOPE® and ESMPRO® complete solution for improved remote management, the solution enables remote monitoring and control of each server, regardless of the status of the OS and even if the platform has been powered down via a web browser. This limits the intervention required by technical teams, which minimises support and administration costs, downtime and the company’s energy consumption.

This integrated software suite offers the following functions: remote access via a LAN (KVM over IP, Remote Media, and Graphics Console), inventory, software and patch roll out, diagnostics and problem resolution via alerts, server group management.

2 new features are available in the new NEC Express5800/R140b-4 server:

  • Proactive alert maintenance and early intervention service, “ExpressReport”. This service aims to considerably reduce system downtime by automatically detecting problems via the “NEC Maintenance Center” service, and analysing and correcting system failures proactively.

  • Continuous update service, “Express Update”. This feature verifies installed versions on one or more servers and notifies administrators when new versions are available, so that these can be updated automatically.

Control of energy consumption

The control of energy consumption is managed by a new feature supplied as standard on NEC 4 -way servers. This technology is a control module of the real-time power supply: "Power Control" which allows one to monitor and analyze the server power consumption, in order to optimize the TCO and improve the user’s environmental policy.
